Mesothelioma Symptoms
Since mesothelioma takes a long time to develop inside a human body it is often difficult to identify the symptoms of mesothelioma. In the early stages of mesothelioma there may not even be any symptoms at all. When they do appear the most common early symptoms are shortness of breath and chest pains. These symptoms on their own will not usually identify mesothelioma and are often misdiagnosed as asthma or other respiratory problems like pneumonia.
Other early symptoms of mesothelioma often include weight loss, a persistent cough or difficulty swallowing food. Once these symptoms are common to a variety of diseases and ailments and without knowing of previous exposure to asbestos most doctors would not identify these conditions as an indication of mesothelioma.
Later as the disease progresses other symptoms may appear. One of these is a build up of fluid in the lung and chest cavity areas. This is one of the most common signs of pleural mesothelioma and may be the first real outward sign to a physician of the presence of mesothelioma. This may show up as a breathing difficulty or shortness of breath but upon further examination the attending physician will normally spot the fluid accumulation as a symptom of mesothelioma. Once they follow a procedure of draining this fluid and examining the affected area they can usually confirm the presence of this type of mesothelioma.
Other types of mesothelioma will produce very different symptoms in a sufferer. In peritoneal mesothelioma patients may have stomach or abdominal pain, vomiting, swelling, nausea, and loss of appetite. They may even have breathing problems or chest pains that are caused by tumors pressing against the abdominal walls. These symptoms are also common to many other ailments and on their own may not indicate the presence of mesothelioma to a doctor but if it is mesothelioma then these problems will not only persist but get worse.
These problems from peritoneal mesothelioma may include severe cramping, bowel obstructions and blood clotting. Still not completely indicative of the development of mesothelioma but these severe symptoms should cause the medical professional to dig a little deeper into their cause which lays of course in the mesothelioma.
As the mesothelioma moves into the later stages more symptoms and increasing severity will help a doctor make the correct diagnosis of mesothelioma. These symptoms may cause the doctor to order additional testing like x-rays, CAT scans and MRI examinations that will help them pinpoint the reason for the symptoms and the disease that is causing them.
If you or someone in your family has any of these symptoms and has been exposed to asbestos during their lifetime this information should be passed along to your family doctor as soon as possible. That will help them make better and faster sense of the mesothelioma symptoms that they are suffering from.
